GRAVLAM (ENGRAVEABLE LAMINATED SHELL)
Welcome to a totally new form of laminated shell, developed for those who need exceptionally large single pieces which can be engraved or very lightly sanded without going through any layers! The top layer is one piece of .020" - .025" solid shell manufactured with a recently discovered and proprietary process, which is backed with regular thin layers (or crushed shell) to bring the blank up to a full .060" (1.53mm) thickness.

GRAVLAM must be handled with careful precision in order to work properly: it must be inlayed flush to the final/finished surface, to avoid any but the lightest sanding, so may be more appropriate to custom handwork than to production applications, at least until experience leads us to proven techniques. If you come up with any special tricks, please let us know, and we'll continue to openly share pooled knowledge with anyone that asks. Thanks!
Individual pieces are gigantic for the types of shell from which they
come, with 2-3 pieces/oz., sizes running 3 ½" to over 5" long,
and widths of 1 ¼" to 1 ½", depending on the shell, but
much larger than ever before possible with regular solid shell! We currently
stock flat materials as well as pieces that have been precision arched
to two commonly used guitar fingerboard radiuses of 12" and 16". The arched
shell will require a similarly arched supportive dome under it while being
cut, whether by hand or with a machine. Call us for suggestions, or to
